Chicago winter means short days and long night exteriors, and the same wind that complicates camera work complicates lighting rigs. An aerial unit gets the source into position over water, over the river, or down a street where a condor cannot stage.
Airborne lighting units standing in for a helicopter searchlight, moonlight over a wide exterior, a police spot, or a source that has to move with the shot. On night exteriors where a condor cannot reach or cannot get there in time, an aerial unit puts the light exactly where the DP wants it and moves it between setups in seconds.
The flying window here is genuinely seasonal. Winter cold cuts battery endurance roughly in half and lake wind can shut a day down outright. Summer and early autumn are when the lakefront and the river actually cooperate.
